Next generation card machines: piloting new devices

New technologies are making card payments easier and more secure than ever before. Find out what we're doing to ensure Lloyds Bank Cardnet merchants take advantage of the latest innovations.

In order to offer the very latest in terms of PCI compliance and contactless technology, we've started piloting a number of new card machines from two of our main suppliers, Spire and VeriFone.

A pilot programme, which will run for several months, will allow us to gather detailed feedback from businesses selected to test the new devices. This will then inform our decisions regarding the preferred device, with an intended launch date of October 2014.

Meeting new security demands

The new card machines on test are designed to offer the highest levels of data encryption and security. Our new range will meet all of the latest PCI regulations, which are put in place to help merchants prevent, detect and react properly to security incidents.

In updating our card machines, we're also responding to a Visa scheme requirement, which will see some of our older devices retire at the end of 2017. We plan to replace these devices over the coming years to ensure that all card machines meet the latest security specifications and requirements.

Contactless as standard

Once we've completed the pilot process and rolled out the new machines, our entire range of card machines will support contactless card payments. With contactless transactions accounting for an estimated £609 million last year, according to the UK Cards Association, adopting this innovative technology is a growing priority for our merchants.

Contactless card machines allow customers with contactless enabled cards to make transactions under £20 simply by hovering their card above the machine. The number of contactless cards issued in 2013 increased by 26% from 2012, and this trend is expected to continue in 2014.
