Card scheme compliance programmes

The various card schemes, working with merchant acquirers, keep a close eye on compliance through a number of programmes. This is done on an ongoing basis, and their aim is to reduce fraud and chargeback volumes – and make sure merchants are following best practice.

Among others, these compliance programmes include:

  • Merchants with excessive chargeback to sales volumes
  • Merchants with an excessive fraud to sales ratio
  • Chip fallback, where a chip card isn’t processed with a chip-reading device

Of course, there are many reasons a transaction might be processed without using the chip data. A technical issue such as a faulty chip, or chip-reading device, or a merchant not following acceptance practices.
